Right now, millions of African children wake up not to laughter, learning, or play, but to endless hours of dangerous and exhausting labor. Instead of holding pencils, they grip tools too heavy for their small hands. Instead of classrooms, they’re trapped in mines, fields, and factories, robbed of the safety, freedom, and childhood every child deserves.

I will never forget the day I saw him.

A little boy, no older than seven, walking alone on a dusty road, his small frame weighed down by a heavy sack. His face was covered in dirt, his eyes dull with exhaustion. I asked my driver, “Where is he going?”

“To the mines,” he replied. “He works there.”

I felt a knot tighten in my chest. This child—no different from my nephews, no different from the kids I see running through parks—wasn’t heading to school or home to his family. He was walking toward a life of suffering. I told my driver to follow him.

What I saw next shattered me.

Hundreds of children, just like him, were chipping away at rocks with their bare hands, inhaling toxic dust, and risking their lives for less than $2 a day-if they were paid at all. Among them were pregnant women with babies tied to their backs and disabled individuals forced into brutal labor. All of them trapped in a cycle of poverty, mining the materials used in our phones, laptops, and electric cars.

That moment changed everything.

How We Can Stop This

I refuse to look away. That’s why I have launched a company that is identifying children from these mines, fields and factories in Congo.

We will:

Fund education to get children back in school

Provide nutritious meal plans at school and in general

Provide healthcare for children and their families trapped in poverty

Replace manual labor with machines to stop the exploitation

So far, my team has identified more than 6,000 Congolese children currently working at the mines. We need to stop this, but we cannot do this alone.
